About the fiscal year 2024

A fiscal year is denoted by the year in which it ends, not in which it starts, so the US federal government fiscal year starting on October 1, 2023 and ending on September 30, 2024 is denoted as the fiscal year 2024 (often abbreviated as FY2024 or FY24), not as fiscal year 2023/24 or 2023-2024. If you have been handed a date range rather than a year number, it saves a lot of second-guessing to know that October 2023 to September 2024, the fiscal year 2023-2024 and FY2024 all mean the same twelve months. Please also note that the dates of the fiscal year may be different in other jurisdictions. For further information please see Fiscal year on Wikipedia.

Why the federal fiscal year starts on October 1

The federal fiscal year has begun on October 1 since fiscal year 1977. Before that it started on July 1, and the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 moved the start date back by three months to leave Congress more room between the President's budget request and the start of the year that request pays for. That is why these fiscal calendars open in October 2023 instead of January, and why the first quarter of FY2024 is October, November and December 2023 rather than January to March. If your own year runs on a different span, there are matching calendars further down this page for July to June, August to July, September to August and the plain January to December year.

How the four quarters are color-coded

Every template on this page uses the same color key, so you can see which quarter a date falls in without counting months: Q1 (October to December 2023) in orange, Q2 (January to March 2024) in blue, Q3 (April to June 2024) in green and Q4 (July to September 2024) in purple. The color sits on the month heading and on the Saturday and Sunday cells, which means weekends and quarter boundaries both stand out while the space you actually write in stays white. The quarters are not printed as Q1 to Q4 on the sheet - the color does that job - so there is nothing to cross out if your own quarter numbering runs differently.
US federal holidays are shaded pale red with the date in red. Where a federal holiday falls on a weekend, the observed date is marked as well as the day itself, so you are not left working out which day the office is actually closed. Days that a month does not have are grayed out so that rows and columns stay lined up, and on the layouts that print holiday names, Easter is shown as a plain label without the red holiday shading, as it is not an official US federal holiday.

What is already printed, and what you fill in

Printed for you on every fiscal year 2024 calendar template: the month names with their year, every date with its weekday, the Sunday to Saturday week structure, the quarter colors and the US federal holidays. How the holidays appear depends on how much room the layout has - most templates print the holiday name next to the date, the two year at a glance templates list every holiday with its date in a table at the foot of the sheet, and the timeline template (days across the page) shades the holiday without a name, because a cell one day wide has no room for one.
Everything else is blank and yours to fill in. Print the sheet and write straight onto it: there is no watermark across the calendar grid, so your own entries stay easy to read, and the Calendarpedia logo and copyright line sit outside the grid at the top and foot of the sheet. If you would rather type your entries in before printing, the same calendars are available as Excel and Word files, linked further down this page.

Other calendars that cover these months

The federal fiscal year is only one of several twelve-month spans that do not start in January. If yours runs to different dates, these cover the same period from a different starting point:

Free to download, with no sign-up

Every fiscal year 2024 calendar on this page is free. There is no account to create, no email address to hand over, no trial that runs out and no watermark across the calendar grid. Click the download button under any template and the file is yours, ready to print as many times as you need.

How to open and print your fiscal calendar 2024

These are ordinary PDF files, so they open in any web browser and in any PDF reader on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook, with nothing to install. In the print dialog, set the paper size to Letter or A4 and choose "Actual size" or 100% if you want the sheet at full scale, or "Fit to page" if your printer is clipping the edges. Set the paper orientation to landscape for the landscape templates and portrait for the portrait ones, and pick single-sided printing for the two page and four page versions so you can pin the sheets up side by side. To type your entries in before printing rather than writing them by hand, the same fiscal year calendars are available as editable Excel spreadsheets and Word documents.

What to add to your fiscal year 2024 calendar

The dates that matter in a fiscal year are rarely the ones already on a calendar, so these templates leave the writing space clear for the ones that do:
  • Budget and appropriations milestones, including the date any continuing resolution runs to
  • Quarterly close and reporting deadlines for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4
  • Contract periods of performance, option year start dates, and renewal or recompete deadlines
  • Grant application windows, drawdown schedules, and grant reporting deadlines
  • Invoicing and payment schedules, alongside pay periods on your payroll calendar
  • Audit fieldwork, internal review cycles, and the September 30 year-end close
  • Obligation deadlines and end-of-year spending cut-offs
  • Travel, training, and conference budgets, planned quarter by quarter
  • Board, committee, and program review dates across the annual planning cycle

Who these fiscal year calendars are for

Anyone whose funding, reporting or contract year runs October to September rather than January to December: finance, accounting and budget teams working to the federal fiscal year, program and project managers in federal agencies, government contractors and subcontractors tracking periods of performance, grant recipients and grant writers working to federal award cycles, payroll administrators and bookkeepers, auditors and compliance staff, and analysts who need a fiscal year planner they can mark up rather than a calendar year one. The same templates work just as well as a personal fiscal year diary for tax planning and forecasting, if your own financial planning cycle happens to match the federal one.

The full fiscal year on one landscape sheet
All twelve months from October 2023 to September 2024 sit side by side as columns, with every date on its own row and the weekday printed beside it. Because the months run left to right in fiscal order rather than calendar order, you can see at a glance how far into Q1, Q2, Q3 or Q4 any date falls. Federal holiday names are printed next to the date, so there is nothing to look up. Template 6 is the same idea in portrait.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
  • all twelve months of the fiscal year on a single landscape page
  • every date carries its weekday abbreviation, so no counting back to work out a Tuesday
  • federal holiday names printed in red beside the date, Easter shown as a plain label
  • month headings and weekend cells shaded in the color of their fiscal quarter
  • days a month does not have are grayed out, keeping the columns lined up

Half the fiscal year per landscape page
The same column layout as template 1, split across two landscape sheets so that every date row is roughly twice as deep. October 2023 to March 2024 fills the first page and April to September 2024 the second, which keeps each half of the fiscal year on a sheet of its own and gives you room to write more than a word or two per day.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
  • half a year (six months) per page, on two landscape sheets
  • taller day rows than template 1, for longer entries or several per day
  • page one covers Q1 and Q2, page two covers Q3 and Q4
  • federal holiday names printed in red beside the date
  • quarter colors carried on the month headings and the weekend cells

Timeline layout, with the days running across the page
The dates 1 to 31 run along the top and repeat along the bottom, and the twelve months of the fiscal year are listed down the left side, so the sheet reads like a project timeline rather than a calendar grid. Blocks of consecutive days line up horizontally, which makes this the easiest of these layouts for drawing a reporting window, an audit period or a contract term as a bar across the sheet.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • linear calendar (days arranged horizontally)
  • names of the months arranged vertically down the left side
  • day numbers 1 to 31 along the top and repeated along the bottom edge
  • ideal as a fiscal year project timeline tracker, Gantt-style planner or wall chart
  • weekends and federal holidays shaded, holidays without a name (a one-day cell has no room)
  • each month row carries its quarter color, so Q1 to Q4 read as four bands down the sheet

Classic year at a glance, in landscape
Twelve month blocks in the familiar grid, four across and three down, each with its own Sunday to Saturday columns. A table of every US federal holiday in fiscal year 2024, with dates and names, is printed at the foot of the sheet, which makes this the one to hand out if people mainly need to know when the office is closed. Quarters are shown by color here rather than by row, because a four-across grid puts January next to December 2023. Template 7 is the portrait version, and it lines the quarters up one per row.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • classic design 12-months planner, four month blocks across and three down
  • table of US federal holidays for fiscal year 2024 printed at the foot of the sheet
  • days of the week in columns, Sunday to Saturday, in every month block
  • month heading and weekend columns shaded in the quarter color
  • the whole fiscal year in view at once, for a wall, a noticeboard or a desk pad

One portrait page, split into two half-year blocks
October 2023 to March 2024 sits in the upper block and April to September 2024 in the block below, each with six month columns and every date on its own row. Stacking the two halves is what lets the full fiscal year fit on one portrait sheet without the columns becoming too narrow to write in, so this is the one to reach for if the calendar is going into a binder rather than onto a wall.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • one portrait page, in two blocks of six months
  • upper block covers Q1 and Q2, lower block covers Q3 and Q4
  • each date on its own row with the weekday beside it
  • federal holiday names printed in red beside the date
  • fits a binder, a clipboard or a folder without folding

The full fiscal year on one portrait page
All twelve months run across as columns, with the dates 1 to 31 down both the left and the right edge of the sheet. Reading across a row shows you what weekday the same date falls on in every month of the fiscal year, which is what you want when you are lining up a monthly reporting date or a recurring payment run. Federal holiday names print in red beside the day. This is the portrait counterpart to template 1.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • all twelve months of the fiscal year on a single portrait page
  • day numbers 1 to 31 down both edges, months as columns across the sheet
  • read across a row to compare the same date in every month
  • federal holiday names printed in red beside the day
  • month headings and weekend cells shaded in the quarter color

Year at a glance, with one quarter per row
The twelve month blocks are laid out three across and four down, so every row of the sheet is exactly one fiscal quarter: October to December 2023 along the top, then January to March, April to June and July to September 2024. If you think in quarters, this is the layout to choose over template 4, because Q1 to Q4 read straight down the page. A table of the fiscal year's federal holidays with their dates runs across the foot.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • twelve month blocks, three across and four down, on one portrait page
  • one fiscal quarter per row: Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 read down the sheet
  • each row shaded in its own quarter color, orange, blue, green and purple
  • table of US federal holidays for fiscal year 2024 printed at the foot
  • days of the week in columns, Sunday to Saturday, in every month block

Continuous weeks, with a notes column down the side
Instead of separate month blocks, the weeks run without a break from the start of the fiscal year to the end, with the month name in a colored block down the left and the weekdays in fixed columns. A "Federal holidays / notes" column runs down the right of the sheet, already carrying each holiday name on the right week and leaving the rest of the column free for your own notes. Weeks that straddle a month boundary stay whole, so no week is repeated or cut in half - handy when you count in weeks rather than months.

  • starts October 1, 2023 and ends September 30, 2024
  • continuous (rolling) week rows, running straight through the fiscal year
  • weeks that cross a month boundary are shown once, in full
  • month names in colored blocks down the left, shaded by fiscal quarter
  • "Federal holidays / notes" column down the right, with holiday names already filled in
  • plenty of room per week for notes, actions or a running commentary
  • suits weekly reporting, sprint planning and payroll weeks
