January 2016 carries two federal holidays: New Year's Day on Friday, January 1 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. Interesting facts about the month of January
The month of January is the first month of the year and the first of seven months that have 31 days (the others are March, May, July, August, October, and December). January's name derives from Janus, the name of the Roman god of beginnings and endings, entrances and exits, doors and gates, after whom the Romans called January Ianuarius. It belongs to the same word family as ianua, the Latin word for door.
- The zodiac signs for January are Capricorn (until about January 20*) and Aquarius (from about January 21*).
- January begins with the same day of the week as April and July in leap years, as October in non-leap years, and as May of the previous year in all years because there is never a leap day (February 29) between the two months.
- In 2016 January starts on a Friday and ends on a Sunday.
