The month of March is the third month of the year and the second of seven months that have 31 days (the others are January, May, July, August, October, and December). In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the first month of spring and contains the spring equinox (one of the two days of the year when day and night are of approximately equal length) which occurs between March 19 and March 21 and marks the astronomical beginning of spring (the spring equinox occurs at the same moment in time all over the world, but the date and local time differ from place to place depending on a location's time zone). March derives its name from Mars, the Roman god of war, after whom the Romans called March Martius, and was originally the first month of the Roman calendar.
- The zodiac signs for March are Pisces (until about March 20*) and Aries (from about March 21*).
- March always begins with the same day of the week as November and in non-leap years also as February.
