The month of May is the fifth month of the year and the third of seven months that have 31 days (the others are January, March, July, August, October, and December). May's name derives from the name of the Greek goddess Maia, after whom the Romans called May Maius and who has been identified with the Roman fertility goddess Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May.
- The zodiac signs for May are Taurus (until about May 20*) and Gemini (from about May 21*).
- May begins with the same day of the week as January of the following year, but no other month of the same year begins with the same day of the week as May.
- Late May (Memorial Day weekend) typically marks the start of the summer vacation season in the United States that ends on Labor Day, the first Monday of September.
