Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. It is a public holiday in all Australian states and territories and is celebrated annually on January 26.

The date was chosen to commemorate the day of the establishment of the first British settlement at Sydney Cove by Captain Arthur Phillip on January 26, 1788, and thus the founding of Sydney.

Set in the middle of the Australian summer, it has become the biggest annual civic event in Australia, marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards the night before, the announcement of the Australia Day Honours list, addresses from the Governor-General and the Prime Minister and many high-profile events. The day is celebrated all over the country with community events, festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies, and in parties with friends and family.

Australia Day is Australia's equivalent to America's Independence Day and France's Bastille Day.
