Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers and the efforts of the labour movement around the globe to improve labourers' working conditions. More than 80 countries around the world celebrate Labour Day. In most countries it is celebrated on May 1.

Notable exceptions to this rule are the English-speaking countries: the United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day (spelled Labour Day in Canada) on the first Monday of September, in Australia the date of the Labour Day public holiday varies considerably between the various states and territories (first or second Monday in March, May, and October), and the UK has a bank holiday on the first Monday in May, blandly named Early May bank holiday.

For most countries Labour Day is synonymous with, or associated with, International Workers' Day which is celebrated on the same day. It also falls on the same day as May Day, an ancient pagan festival of spring, rebirth and fertility in many European countries.
