The month of
December is the twelfth and last month of the year and the seventh of seven months that have 31 days (the others are January, March, May, July, August and October). It is best known worldwide as the month of Christmas. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the first month of winter and contains the winter solstice, the shortest day (that is, the day with the fewest daylight hours) and the longest night of the year, which occurs between December 20 and 23 (the date and local time differ from place to place depending on the year and a location's time zone). The name of the month of December is derived from the Latin word
decem (ten) because December was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar.
- The zodiac signs for December are Sagittarius (until about December 21*) and Capricorn (from about December 22*).
- December always begins with the same day of the week as September.
- In 2026 December starts on a Tuesday and ends on a Thursday.
