Download freely editable and easily printable academic year calendar templates for 2021-2022 in Microsoft Excel format (.xlsx), covering September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022. Tailored for the United States, they show all US federal holidays and are free to download and available for immediate use, with no sign-up required.
An academic year calendar starts where the academic year starts. Running from September through August keeps the fall and spring semesters on the same sheet and puts the long summer at the end rather than splitting it across two pages, so you are not turning over in the middle of a degree year or working from two calendars at once. For 2021-2022 that means everything from orientation week to the last day before the summer break sits in one continuous view.
Semester dates, reading periods, exam windows and commencement are set institution by institution, so these calendars are left blank for you to fill in. What is already on them is the part that does not vary: every date, every weekday and every US federal holiday for 2021/22, shown on the day it is actually observed, so all you have to add is what is specific to your college or university.
These calendars suit universities, colleges, community colleges, graduate schools and vocational institutions of every kind, public or private, at certificate, associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, whatever the individual term, semester and vacation dates happen to be, because the dates you add are your own. See also: further information about the academic year in the USA and the US education system in general.
If you would rather not be tied to a particular year at all, the same span is available as undated academic year planners. Nothing is dated on those, so one download covers this academic year and every one after it, and you supply the dates yourself.
How much you need to write in each day decides which layout to take. One page puts the whole academic year in front of you at once, two pages give you six months per sheet, and four pages devote a quarter to each sheet with the largest day boxes of the set. Every one of those comes in both landscape and portrait, in classic grid, linear and rolling arrangements, with Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays shaded so teaching days stand out from the rest. Have a look through the templates below and choose the layout that fits how you want to map out 2021/22.

Free to download, editable, no sign-up

Every .xlsx file here is free to download and free to use, with no registration and no email address required. The files open in Microsoft Excel on Windows and Mac, in Google Sheets straight in your browser and in LibreOffice Calc, so you can edit the 2021/22 academic calendar online or offline, save a separate version for each course, department or cohort, and share it without anyone touching your own copy.

How to use this academic calendar in Excel and Google Sheets

Each calendar is an .xlsx file that opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc, so you can type semester dates straight into the day cells and shade whole runs of days to mark terms, reading periods or exam weeks. Upload it to Google Drive and it becomes an academic calendar in Google Sheets that a whole department can work from, with everyone looking at the same copy instead of emailing versions around. Keep it on screen and update it as the schedule changes, save a separate copy for each course, and print it on US Letter paper whenever you want the current version on the wall. If what you need to add is sentences rather than shaded blocks of days, the Word and Google Docs edition gives each day more room to write in, and there is a ready-to-print PDF version for when the calendar only has to go on the wall.

What to add to your 2021/22 academic calendar

The days are left blank because the dates that matter are your institution's own. Once the sheet is in front of you, these are the entries that usually go on first:
  • The fixed points of the year
Orientation and the first day of classes, the last day of teaching, and the breaks around them: fall break, Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break and the start of the summer.
  • The academic structure
Fall and spring semester boundaries, summer sessions, add and drop deadlines, withdrawal dates, midterm and final grade submission, and commencement.
  • Assessment and deadlines
Midterms, finals and the reading periods before them, coursework and dissertation submission dates, defense and viva dates, and grade release.
  • Teaching and research commitments
Lecture and seminar blocks, lab sessions, office hours, conference travel, fieldwork windows, grant application and reporting deadlines, and sabbatical dates.
  • Everything else the year runs on
Registration and enrollment windows, faculty meetings, exam boards, open days, career fairs, athletics fixtures and move-in and move-out weekends.

Who these 2021/22 academic calendars are for

  • Faculty and course planning
Map out the whole of 2021/22 before the semester starts: lecture and seminar blocks, assessment dates, grading windows, office hours and the weeks you are away. Print a landscape version as a wall chart for the department, or take a portrait one for a course file, and hand the same sheet to everyone so the department is working from one calendar rather than four.
  • Students and coursework
A printable copy of the academic year for a binder, a dorm wall or a study carrel, with assignment deadlines, midterms and finals, reading periods and lab sessions all in one place. The portrait layouts fit a notebook or a course pack, while the two-page and four-page versions leave enough room to write the actual due dates in rather than just marking them.
  • Departments, registrars and administration
Registration windows, add and drop deadlines, exam boards, faculty meetings, open days and commencement all sit on a single sheet for 2021/22, which makes it straightforward to see what conflicts before anything is scheduled. Free to copy for every member of the department, with nothing printed across the dates to get in the way of your own entries.
  • Researchers and graduate students
A twelve-month view for work measured in months rather than days: thesis chapters, fieldwork windows, grant deadlines, conference abstract dates and supervision meetings. The linear and rolling layouts show how long a phase actually runs and where it collides with teaching.
  • Everyone else on the academic calendar
Librarians, lab technicians, student services, athletics staff and anyone whose year is shaped by the semester rather than by January. Useful for planning leave around the teaching year, and for seeing at a glance where a break lines up with a federal holiday.

The academic year wall calendar
The complete 2021/22 academic year on one landscape sheet, from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2022, so the summer sits at the end of the year where it belongs rather than splitting it in half. Pin it up in a department office and the whole year is visible at once: semester dates, reading periods, exam windows, commencement. The months run across the top with the days below, and every box is left blank, because term dates are set institution by institution and this calendar is meant to take yours.

  • months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
  • 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • covers the full 2021-2022 academic year on a single sheet, with the summer at the end
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • blank day boxes for your own semester dates, reading periods, exam windows and commencement
  • weekends shaded in the standard Calendarpedia design, so teaching days stand out
  • suits a department wall, a faculty office or a shared noticeboard
  • the portrait counterpart is template 6, which fits the same full year onto an upright sheet (portrait orientation)

half-year academic calendar, landscape, 2 pages

The half-year academic calendar with room to write
The same September-to-August span split across two landscape sheets, six months to each. Halving the year doubles the size of every day box, which is what you want when the calendar is going to be written on rather than just read: assignment deadlines, lab sessions, exam dates, submission deadlines. September to February on the first sheet, March to August on the second, and both pinned up together still give you the whole 2021/22 academic year on the wall.

  • months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
  • half a year (six months) per page
  • 2 pages, landscape orientation (horizontal)
  • September to February on page one, March to August on page two
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • larger day boxes than the one-page layout, with room to write deadlines and exam dates in by hand
  • works as a wall chart with both sheets pinned up side by side

linear academic year timeline, landscape, 1 page

The linear academic year timeline
The days run left to right in one continuous line with the month names down the left side, so the academic year reads as a timeline rather than a grid. That makes it easy to see how long something actually lasts: a twelve-week module, the gap between an assignment being set and submitted, the run of weeks before finals. It is the layout department heads and doctoral supervisors tend to print when they are mapping a syllabus or a research phase across the whole of 2021/22.

  • linear calendar (days arranged horizontally)
  • names of the months arranged vertically down the left side
  • use as academic year project timeline tracker
  • 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • reads as a timeline, so the length of a module, project or semester is easy to measure
  • suits syllabus mapping, thesis chapters, fieldwork windows and grant timetables

The year-at-a-glance academic calendar
Twelve month blocks across a single landscape page, September through August, in the familiar layout everyone can read without being shown how. This is a reference calendar rather than a planning one: you use it to check which week a date falls in, or how many teaching weeks are left before a break, not to write a whole semester into. A federal holidays table runs across the foot of the sheet, so every holiday of the span is named and dated in one place. Small enough to hand out to a seminar group or file inside the cover of a course pack.

  • classic design 12-months planner
  • 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
  • all 12 months of the academic year as separate month blocks on a single sheet
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • a quick reference calendar for checking dates rather than writing entries in
  • compact enough to hand out to a seminar group or file in a course pack
  • the portrait counterpart is template 7, the same twelve blocks on an upright sheet (portrait orientation)

two half-year blocks, portrait, 1 page

The portrait academic year calendar in two blocks
The whole 2021/22 academic year on one portrait page, arranged as two blocks of six months: September to February above, March to August below. Portrait fits where landscape will not: a binder, a course file, a notebook, the narrow strip of wall beside a whiteboard. Splitting the year into two blocks keeps the months wide enough to read comfortably while still fitting September to August onto a single sheet.

  • two half-year blocks on 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
  • September to February in the upper block, March to August in the lower block
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • the whole academic year on one sheet, without folding or turning a page
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • portrait format fits a binder, a course file or a notebook

Editable academic calendar 2021/22
compact academic year calendar, portrait, 1 page

The compact academic year calendar
The 2021/22 academic year running top to bottom on one portrait page in a single narrow column, the most compact layout here. It fits a locker door, a course file or a corner of a noticeboard without taking over the space around it, which also makes it the cheapest one to photocopy for a whole cohort. Best where the year needs to be permanently visible rather than written on.

  • 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
  • days listed vertically in a continuous run from September to August
  • the most compact of the academic year layouts on this page
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • fits a locker door, a course file or a corner of a noticeboard
  • cheap to photocopy for a whole cohort or seminar group
  • the landscape counterpart is template 1, the same full year on a wide sheet for a wall

year at a glance, portrait, 1 page

The portrait year-at-a-glance calendar
The traditional twelve-month grid in portrait, September through August. Familiar enough that students, faculty and administrators can all read it without explanation, and compact enough to go out as a handout at orientation or to sit at the front of a course pack. Like its landscape counterpart it carries a federal holidays table at the foot of the sheet, naming and dating every holiday of the span. Take this one when the calendar is for checking dates rather than recording them.

  • 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
  • all 12 months as separate month blocks on a single portrait sheet
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • reads without explanation, so it works as a handout at orientation
  • a reference calendar for checking dates rather than recording them

Editable academic calendar 2021/22
rolling layout with weekdays in columns, portrait, 1 page

The rolling academic calendar with weekdays in columns
A continuous portrait layout in which each day of the week has its own column and the weeks run down the page. Anything on a weekly schedule lines up vertically: a Tuesday lecture, a Thursday lab, the Friday seminar, the day the library books are due back. Useful for the commitments that repeat all year rather than the one-time dates, and for seeing at a glance how a break week shifts everything that follows it.

  • 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
  • days of the week arranged in columns - good for planning repeating commitments
  • weeks run continuously down the page from September to August
  • runs from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022
  • every US federal holiday of the 2021/22 academic year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
  • anything on a weekly schedule lines up in a single column
  • suits recurring lectures, labs, seminars, office hours and standing meetings
