A school year calendar starts where the school year starts. Running from August through July keeps the fall and spring semesters on the same sheet and puts the summer break at both ends, so you are not turning a page in the middle of the year or working from two calendars at once. For the 2020-2021 school year that means everything from the first in-service day to the last day before summer sits in one continuous view.
Term dates, breaks, grading periods and professional development days are set district by district, and homeschooling families set their own, so these calendars are left blank for you to fill in. What is already on them is the part that does not vary: every date, every weekday and every US federal holiday for 2020/21, shown on the day it is actually observed, so all you have to add is what is specific to your school.
These calendars suit schools, colleges, universities and vocational institutions of every kind, public or private, as well as homeschools and co-ops, from preschool and kindergarten through elementary, middle and high school to graduate and professional programs, whatever the individual term, semester and vacation dates happen to be, because the dates you add are your own. See also: further information about the school year in the USA and the US education system in general.
How much you need to write in each day decides which layout to take. One page puts the whole school year in front of you at once, two pages give you six months per sheet, and four pages devote a quarter to each sheet with the largest day boxes of the set. Every one of those comes in both landscape and portrait, in classic grid, linear and rolling arrangements, with Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays shaded so teaching days stand out from the rest. Browse the templates below and choose the layout that fits how you want to map out 2020/21.

Every .xlsx file here is free to download and free to use, with no registration and no email address required. The files open in Microsoft Excel on Windows and Mac, in Google Sheets straight in your browser and in LibreOffice Calc, so you can edit the 2020/21 school calendar online or offline, save a separate version for each class, department or child, and share it without anyone touching your own copy. How to use this school calendar in Excel and Google Sheets
Each calendar is an .xlsx file that opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc, so you can type term dates straight into the day cells and shade whole runs of days to mark semesters, breaks, exam weeks or grading periods. Upload it to Google Drive and it becomes a school calendar in Google Sheets that a whole department can work from, with everyone looking at the same copy instead of emailing versions around. Keep it on screen and update it as the schedule changes, save a separate copy for each class, and print it on US Letter paper whenever you want the current version on the wall. If what you need to add is sentences rather than shaded blocks of days, the Word and Google Docs edition gives each day more room to write in, and there is a ready-to-print PDF version for when the calendar only has to go on the wall. What to add to your 2020/21 school calendar
The days are left blank because the dates that matter are local ones, whether they come from a district calendar or from a homeschool plan you set yourself. Once the sheet is in front of you, these are the entries that usually go on first:- The fixed points of the year
The first and last day of school, and the breaks around them: fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break and the start of summer vacation. - The academic structure
Semester, trimester or quarter boundaries, marking and grading periods, report card dates and parent-teacher conferences. - The days that are not full days
Professional development and in-service days, early release days and half days, and the snow days worth leaving room for at the end of the year. - Assessment and deadlines
State testing windows, midterms and finals, coursework and assignment due dates, and the test prep weeks leading up to them. - Everything else the year runs on
Picture day, open house and back-to-school night, sports seasons, field trips, concerts, prom and graduation.
Who these 2020/21 school calendars are for
- Teachers and the classroom
Map out all of 2020/21 before the year starts: unit plans, assessment dates, grading periods, field trips and in-service days. Print a landscape version as a wall chart for the classroom or the teachers' lounge, or take a portrait one for a lesson plan binder or a substitute folder, and hand the same sheet to everyone so the department is working from one calendar rather than four. - Students and coursework
A printable copy of the school year for a binder, a locker door or a study wall, with assignment deadlines, exam dates, study blocks and club meetings all in one place. The portrait layouts fit a notebook or a course pack, while the two-page and four-page versions leave enough room to write the actual due dates in rather than just marking them. - Homeschool families
A homeschool calendar you set yourself: your own start and end dates, co-op days, field trips and the weeks you are taking off, with teaching days easy to count against whatever your state requires. The linear and rolling layouts suit a four-day week or any schedule that does not follow the local district, and nothing on the sheet assumes a standard term structure. - School offices and administration
Enrollment dates, report card periods, parent-teacher conferences, board meetings and staff training all sit on a single sheet for 2020/21, which makes it straightforward to see what conflicts before anything is scheduled. Free to copy for every staff member, with nothing printed across the dates to get in the way of your own entries. - Parents and families
A free printable school calendar for the fridge or the kitchen bulletin board, where term dates, breaks, game schedules and pickup arrangements stay visible to everyone in the house. Useful for planning family trips around the school year rather than around the calendar year, and for seeing at a glance where a break lines up with a federal holiday.

school year wall calendar, landscape, 1 page
The school year wall calendarThe complete 2020/21 school year on one landscape sheet, from August 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021, so the summer break sits at both ends where it belongs instead of splitting the year in half. Pin it up in a classroom or a teachers' lounge and the whole year is visible at once: semester dates, grading periods, exam weeks, in-service days. The months run across the top with the days below, and every box is left blank, because term dates are set district by district and this calendar is meant to take yours.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
- months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
- covers the full 2020-2021 school year on a single sheet, with the summer break at both ends
- all US federal holidays for the 2020/21 school year already marked, so you only add what is local to your district
- blank day boxes for your own first and last day of school, breaks, grading periods and in-service days
- weekends shaded in the standard Calendarpedia design, so teaching days stand out
- suits a classroom wall, a teachers' lounge or a department bulletin board
- an editable school calendar for Excel and Google Sheets: type your term dates straight into the day cells
- template 5 is the portrait counterpart, fitting the same full year onto an upright sheet (portrait orientation)

half-year school calendar, landscape, 2 pages
The half-year school calendar with room to writeThe same August-to-July span split across two landscape sheets, six months to each. Halving the year doubles the size of every day box, which is what you want when the calendar is going to be written on rather than just read: assignment deadlines, field trips, parent-teacher conferences, coursework due dates. August to January on the first sheet, February to July on the second, and both pinned up together still give you the whole 2020/21 school year on the wall.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 2 pages, landscape orientation (horizontal)
- months arranged horizontally (along the top), days vertically
- half a year (six months) per page
- August to January on page one, February to July on page two
- US federal holidays shown on both sheets, using the observed date whenever one falls on a weekend as well as the actual date
- larger day boxes than the one-page layout, with room to write deadlines and exam dates in by hand
- works as a wall chart with both sheets pinned up side by side
- shade whole runs of days in Excel or Google Sheets to block out breaks and semesters

Editable school calendar 2020/21
linear school year timeline, landscape, 1 page
The linear school year timelineThe days run left to right in one continuous line with the month names down the left side, so the school year reads as a timeline rather than a grid. That makes it easy to see how long something actually lasts: a six-week unit, the gap between a project being assigned and turned in, the run of weeks before finals. It is the layout department heads tend to print when they are mapping a syllabus or a long coursework project across all of 2020/21.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
- linear calendar (days arranged horizontally)
- names of the months arranged vertically down the left side
- works as a school year project timeline tracker
- US federal holidays marked along the strip, which makes the short teaching weeks easy to pick out
- reads as a timeline, so the length of a unit, project or term is easy to measure
- suits syllabus planning, long coursework projects, department schedules and homeschool blocks that do not follow a district calendar
- edit in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc, on a laptop, tablet or phone

year at a glance, landscape, 1 page
The year-at-a-glance school calendarTwelve month blocks across a single landscape page, August through July, in the familiar layout everyone can read without being shown how. This is a reference calendar rather than a planning one: you use it to check which week a date falls in, or how many teaching weeks are left before a break, not to write the whole term into. A federal holidays table runs across the foot of the sheet, so every holiday of the span is named and dated in one place. Small enough to hand out to a full class or file inside the cover of a binder.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, landscape orientation (horizontal)
- classic month-block calendar design
- all 12 months of the school year as separate month blocks on a single sheet
- every US federal holiday of the school year shown on the date it is observed and the actual date
- a quick reference calendar for checking dates rather than writing entries in
- compact enough to hand out to a class or file inside the cover of a binder
- works the same in Google Sheets as in Excel, so nobody needs a particular program installed
- template 7 is the portrait counterpart, the same twelve month blocks on an upright sheet (portrait orientation)

two half-year blocks, portrait, 1 page
The portrait school year calendar in two blocksThe whole 2020/21 school year on one portrait page, arranged as two blocks of six months. Portrait fits where landscape will not: a binder, a course folder, a notebook, the narrow strip of wall beside a whiteboard. Splitting the year into two blocks keeps the months wide enough to read comfortably while still fitting August to July onto a single sheet.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- two half-year blocks on 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
- August to January in the upper block, February to July in the lower block
- the whole school year on one sheet, without folding or turning a page
- US federal holidays highlighted in both half-year blocks
- portrait format fits a binder, a course folder or a notebook
- weekends shaded so teaching days and breaks are easy to tell apart
- keep the master in Google Sheets and let each teacher copy it for their own class

Editable school calendar 2020/21
compact school year calendar, portrait, 1 page
The compact school year calendarThe 2020/21 school year running top to bottom on one portrait page in a single narrow column, the most compact layout on this page. It fits a locker door, a folder or a corner of a bulletin board without taking over the space around it, which also makes it the cheapest one to photocopy for every student in a class or a grade level. Best where the year needs to be permanently visible rather than written on.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
- days listed vertically in a continuous run from August to July
- the most compact of the school year layouts on this page
- federal holidays still marked despite the compact size, so no day off gets lost
- fits a locker door, a folder or a corner of a bulletin board
- cheap to photocopy for a whole class, a grade level or a homeschool co-op
- an editable school calendar in Google Sheets for anyone without Excel installed

year at a glance, portrait, 1 page
The portrait year-at-a-glance calendarThe traditional twelve-month grid in portrait, August through July. Familiar enough that students, parents and staff can all read it without explanation, and compact enough to go out as a handout at the start of the year or to sit at the front of a course pack. Like its landscape counterpart it carries a federal holidays table at the foot of the sheet, naming and dating every holiday of the span. Take this one when the calendar is for checking dates rather than recording them.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
- classic 12-month calendar design, August through July
- all 12 months as separate month blocks on a single portrait sheet
- all federal holidays of the 2020/21 school year marked, so students and parents can see the fixed days off at a glance
- reads without explanation, so it works as a handout for students, parents and staff
- a reference calendar for checking dates rather than recording them
- editable in Excel and Google Sheets, printable from either when you want it on the wall
- template 4 is the landscape counterpart, the same reference calendar in a wide format

rolling layout with weekdays in columns, portrait, 1 page
The rolling school calendar with weekdays in columnsA continuous portrait layout in which each day of the week has its own column and the weeks run down the page. Anything on a weekly schedule lines up vertically: a Tuesday lab, a Thursday club, the Friday test, the day library books are due back. Useful for the commitments that repeat all year rather than the one-time dates, and for seeing at a glance how a holiday week shifts everything that follows it.
- runs from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021
- 1 page, portrait orientation (vertical)
- days of the week arranged in columns - good for planning repeating events
- weeks run continuously down the page from August to July
- federal holidays marked in the weekday columns, showing at once which weeks lose a teaching day
- anything on a weekly schedule lines up in a single column
- suits recurring classes, labs, clubs, duty rotations, standing meetings and a four-day homeschool week
- sort, shade and annotate the weekday columns in Excel or Google Sheets as the schedule changes
