Armistice Day celebrates the end of World War I and is held every year on November 11.

After the armistice (the formal agreement of the warring parties to stop fighting) had been agreed at 11am in the morning of November 11 of 1918 ("the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month") and World War I had come to an end, many allied nations made the day into a holiday.

Armistice Day is still a holiday in many countries today. It is the original name of these holidays, many of which now have a different name.

Member states of the Commonwealth of Nations (the UK, Canada and a number of others) have adopted Remembrance Day. In the UK, however, the date is not a holiday, only a silence is observed and proper celebrations are held on Remembrance Sunday (the Sunday closest to November 11).

In the United States the day is now known as Veterans Day. It was renamed in 1954 at the urging of major U.S. veterans' organizations. The official national remembrance of those killed in action is Memorial Day, held annually on the last Monday of May, which predates World War I.

In France and Belgium the name remains Armistice Day in its French equivalents ("Jour de l'Armistice", "Armistice de 1918" or simply "Armistice").

In Germany the day is not a public holiday as Germany's national day of mourning, called Volkstrauertag (German for "people's day of mourning"), is celebrated two Sundays before the first day of Advent, on the Sunday closest to November 16 (it falls in the period between 13 November and 19 November).
